Breanne Stewart serves as the Network Director for RareKids-CAN: Pediatric Rare Disease Clinical Trials and Treatment Network– where she provides strategic leadership, oversees operations, and drives collaboration within the network. Having joined MICYRN in 2018 as the inaugural Associate Director of Clinical Trials, Breanne is deeply passionate about optimizing research processes in Canada to ensure timely and efficient treatment and access to therapies for patients and their families.
Here is what she has to say about rare diseases:
In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges facing the rare disease community today?
“One of the biggest challenges facing the rare disease community today is the lack of coordination of resources across the country. This fragmentation leads to siloing, where knowledge, expertise, and resources are not shared efficiently between jurisdictions. As a result, patients and families, researchers, and healthcare providers often face barriers in accessing care and accurate information. There is a clear need for better national and international alignment. By fostering greater collaboration between rare disease partners, we can help ensure that expertise and resources are pooled effectively to address gaps in research and care.”
What are specific areas within the rare disease landscape that particularly excite you and why?
“I am particularly excited about the advancements in technology and research within the rare disease landscape. These innovations are paving the way for the development of novel therapies that can significantly improve the lives of patients and their families affected by rare diseases. The potential of these therapies to enhance the quality of life for patients in Canada is profound. We are not only addressing the unique challenges posed by rare diseases but also creating more personalized and effective treatment options.”
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
“I am a dedicated mother of two, driven and ambitious, who values collaboration and the power of collective effort.”
